Sen. Katie Britt delivered the GOP's official response to the 2023 State of the Union. AdvertisementAlabama Sen. Katie Britt, the youngest Republican woman to ever be elected to the US Senate, gave the GOP's official response to President Joe Biden's State of the Union on Thursday night. While delivering the State of the Union response is considered a thankless task, then-Gov. Nikki Haley, Sen. Marco Rubio, and Sen. Rand Paul all delivered their respective responses before later running for the Republican presidential nomination. Then-Rep. Paul Ryan delivered the GOP's 2011 response and less than two years later was tapped to be then-former Massachusetts Gov.

Johnson isn't buying arguments from the bill's Republican backers that she didn't inspire the proposed change to a longstanding law. Republican state lawmakers who favor the ban have argued that winning twice often means abandoning the lower office, creating a costly special election. Johnson narrowly escaped expulsion last year for her role in a pro-gun control protest inside the Tennessee House chamber. Republican lawmakers are considering changes that target Jones and Pearson, too. In California, a judge ruled Republican state Assemblymember Vince Fong could run for Congress and reelection to his state seat at the same time.

Billionaire investor Leon Cooperman said Tuesday that he would not vote for President Joe Biden or former President Donald Trump in a hypothetical November rematch. I don't know who's bad, I don't know who's worse," Cooperman said on CNBC's Squawk Box. Cooperman, the chair and CEO of the Omega Family office, has mostly backed Republicans in the past, but says he supported Biden in 2020 as a vote against Trump. Biden's campaign began the year with about $46 million in cash, according to FEC filings, more than the $33 million that Trump's campaign had. The poll also found Trump beating Biden 47% to 42% in a hypothetical 2024 rematch.

That's when Rep. Elise Stefanik, the hard-charging upstate New York Republican, came up, according to a person at the dinner table. At the thought of Stefanik as a possible choice for vice president, Trump nodded approvingly. "I'm not going to get into any of my conversations with President Trump. In New York, Stefanik is known as a frequent presence not only in her district but across the state — and someone who can easily be reached. Aside from Stefanik, Bannon ticked through his view of Trump's deep bench of potential VP picks.

At first blush, it seemed to many to be the key to picking former President Donald Trump's lock on the Hawkeye State's Republican base. The alternative vote split roughly in two, leaving Republican Iowa firmly in Trump's hands as the first ballots of the 2024 presidential contest were cast. Trump does not thrive among suburban voters, a group that cost Trump nationally in 2020 and where Haley showed promise Monday. Haley, by contrast, beat Trump in Johnson County, Iowa, a burgeoning tract of homes and businesses along Interstate 80 south of Cedar Rapids. A week earlier, Trump volunteer Jackie Garlock looked around a similar hall in Mason City in northern Iowa on a snowy Saturday, convinced Trump would win.

Sen. Mitt Romney announced that he's retiring from the Senate at the end of his term. In October, he'll release a book detailing how some of his fellow Republicans feel about Trump. The book, written by The Atlantic staff writer McKay Coppins, is based in part from hours of interviews with Romney. A former GOP presidential nominee, Romney has rarely been shy about discussing Trump. Romney was the only Republican to vote to convict Trump on an impeachment charge related to improperly pressuring Ukraine to investigate the Bidens.

Republican Senators laughed at Trump behind his back, Mitt Romney says in his upcoming book. The former President appeared at a GOP Senate luncheon in 2019 days after the Mueller probe concluded. According to the excerpt, Trump made a special appearance at a weekly Senate Repbulicans' caucus lunch in March 2019. A Democratic candidate in a key swing district is in the midst of a scandal over previous work in pornography. At least one prominent Virginia politician, Senate President Pro Tem L. Louise Lucas, immediately came to Gibson's defense, blaming operatives working for Virginia's Republican Gov. As it stands, Youngkin has said that it's his mission to implement a 15-week abortion ban in the commonwealth. So far, the only thing standing in his way has been the Virginia State Senate, where Democrats hold a slim 22-18 majority. So it falls to the voters of Short Pump, Virginia, to decide whether performing on Chaturbate is disqualifying for them, even if that means giving the go-ahead to a statewide abortion ban.

DeSantis has since reversed himself, assuring in recent months that Republicans are "not going to mess with Social Security." Tens of millions of U.S. seniors depend on Social Security and Medicare benefits, and that number is growing as the population ages. Strong majorities of U.S. adults across the political spectrum consistently say they oppose cutting Medicare and Social Security benefits. But many others, including party leaders, have bristled at accusations that the GOP wants to gut Social Security and Medicare. "Social Security, I would do the same thing," he added.

Rep. George Santos told reporters Wednesday that Sen. Mitt Romney's comment "wasn't very Mormon of him." The two had a tense moment at the State of the Union, with Romney telling Santos, "You don't belong here." Reporters and outlets like CNN reported that Romney and Santos had a heated exchange at the State of the Union Tuesday night, with Romney telling Santos: "You don't belong here." According to other reports, Romney told reporters Tuesday night that the ongoing issues around Santos' repeated lies and embellishments are "an embarrassment." "I've made bad judgment calls, and I'm reaping the consequences of those bad judgment calls," Santos later told a prospective staffer.
Ex-Romney strategist Stuart Stevens on MSNBC blasted Nikki Haley for her expected White House bid. "No one else really embodies sort of the collapse of the party as well as Nikki Haley," he said. "Why is Nikki Haley running? I don't think she's really running because she thinks she's going to be president of the United States," Stevens said. He continued: "No one else really embodies sort of the collapse of the party as well as Nikki Haley.

Sykes won the race for the 34th Ohio State House District seat in 2014, succeeding her father. Voting history for Ohio's 13th Congressional DistrictOhio's 13th Congressional District encompasses Akron, the fifth largest city in the state. State Sen. Vernon Sykes, Rep. Emilia Sykes' father, sat on the seven-member commission that drafted the new congressional map.
Former President Donald Trump will not be the Republican Party's White House nominee in the 2024 election, former GOP House Speaker Paul Ryan predicted. Ryan had a tumultuous relationship with Trump before and after his one term in the White House. As a presidential candidate in 2016, Trump bombarded Ryan with insults, labeling him weak and disloyal. Trump has openly floated the possibility of launching another White House bid, though he has yet to make an official announcement. After Trump attacks that first person, "they can follow in behind," Ryan said, likening the situation to a "prisoner's dilemma."
It's unlikely Republicans would join Democrats to vote to convict Trump who's mulled a 2024 run. But the Constitution allows the Senate to bar an official that lawmakers have convicted in an impeachment trial from holding federal office again. It's also not certain if enough Republicans will vote to convict Trump and trigger the vote to ban him from holding public office again. It's not impossible, but the odds of 67 senators voting to convict Trump are long. Jolly at the time said the House need not worry about what the Senate would do with the impeachment vote.
A Trump campaign spokesman did not immediately return a request for comment. Donald Trump personally trademarked the slogan, and his presidential campaign subsequently assumed the trademark. It can even generate cash for years after a political campaign goes dormant. Romney's presidential committee finally terminated itself in September, transferring much of its remaining $92,000 to Romney's US Senate campaign committee after paying off lingering bills. Donations benefited both the Trump presidential campaign and RNC.
American Made Media Consultants became the source of consternation for President Donald Trump's campaign staff, who were kept in the dark about its operations. Despite its $617 million spending through AMMC, the Trump campaign publicly disclosed little information about the company, including how it used the money. Insider independently verified details of this person's account with other people close to the Trump campaign. The shell company — incorporated as American Made Media Consultants Corp. and American Made Media Consultants LLC — allowed Trump's campaign to skirt federally mandated disclosures. "Nothing was done without Jared's approval," the former Trump campaign advisor said.
Dozens of zombie congressional campaign committees together are sitting on nearly $200 million, NBCLX reported. More than half of the Romney presidential committee's remaining $92,000 was transferred to his US Senate committee, which reported about $325,000 cash on hand as of June 30. Asked why it took so long for Romney's campaign to shut down, a former Romney campaign official said it's a "several years' long process to shut down a presidential campaign committee." Obama terminated his 2012 presidential campaign committee more than two years ago, on July 15, 2018. Santorum's 2012 presidential committee owes about $450,000, while his 2016 presidential committee remains about $520,000 in arrears.
